OUR SERVICES

WHY US?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) succinctly states, "The goal for elder abuse prevention is simple: to stop it from happening in the first place" (1). Elders "R" Us roots for the total eradication of elder abuse.

At Elders R Us, our belief is that there's no excuse whatsoever for elder abuse. Our elder abuse prevention training attacks the problem of elder abuse directly by providing elder abuse prevention training to primary caregivers--nurses and nursing aides.

WHAT SETS US APART

Solution-Focused Approach

Elders "R" Us training is solution-focused (not problem-focused), meaning we look forward towards solutions, rather than backward. Our training is on "what works" in the prevention of elder abuse. We pride ourselves for taking the shortest route to the desired outcomes--Elder Abuse Prevention. The training topics are innovative, simple, positive, and amazingly effective.

Soft Skills Training

Elders "R" Us focuses on soft skills as opposed to hard skills training. Soft skills, also known as peoples skills, relate to attitudes and intuitions. Developing soft skills in caregivers creates a productive and healthy work environment that prevents elder abuse. Exceptional eldercare is about quality interactions with elders and calls for caregivers to hone several critical soft skills such as communication, teamwork, problem solving, humility, self-motivation, empathy, flexibility, patience, respect, tolerance, emotional intelligence, cultural intelligence, and positive attitudes.

Ideal for New Hires

Elders "R" Us training is ideal for new hires during the orientation/onboarding process. Research shows that trainees are likely to be more receptive during orientation, which is also the formative period for new hires. New hires are a formidable force for positive change in an organization. Our elder abuse prevention training transforms nurses and nursing aides into elder abuse prevention agents. These trainees influence other employees to create an elder abuse-free culture in long-term care facilities.

Dangers &Consequences of Elder Abuse

Elders "R" Us training highlights the dangers elder abuse poses to the elders, and the consequences perpetrators are likely to suffer.  Elder abuse is a violation of one of a human being's most basic fundamental rights: the right to be safe and free of violence (World Health Organization, 2002). The criminality of elder abuse is purposefully underscored in all Elders "R" Us training topics to forewarn 'smart' elder abusers.

Most Viable Elder Abuse Solution

Elders "R" Us is a viable elder abuse prevention solution. Other elder abuse prevention measures have failed miserably to curb the scourge of elder abuse going by the bulging elder maltreatment reports and the increasing elder abuse complaints. The existing elder abuse prevention strategies are not working!

Evidence-Based Transformative Training

Elders "R" Us is an evidence-based elder abuse prevention training that transforms caregiver attitudes towards elders and eldercare. Caregivers who develop positive attitudes are at a lower risk of being abusive. Elders "R" Us training was born out of a Caregiver Attitude Survey on Nursing Home Stays, in which 83% of the caregivers interviewed were emphatic that they would not, themselves like to stay in a nursing home when they grow old. Evidently, all is not well in nursing homes from the caregivers’ perspective. The survey shows that caregivers working in nursing homes facilities have overwhelmingly negative attitudes towards nursing homestays.  These attitudes have not changed in the last 14 years.

The Elders Are Us Concept

The Elders "R" Us concept implies that we are all in this together. If we don't act now to prevent elder abuse, we could all become victims of elder abuse. Elders "R" Us elder abuse prevention training combats stigma, tackles taboos and de-stereotypes older people. Our elder abuse prevention training puts an equal premium on the trainer, the trainees, and the elders. At Elders "R" Us, caregivers/trainees are seen not merely as economic assets valued primarily for their productivity but as people with complex needs and a desire to prevent elder abuse.

Prototype Training

Prevention of elder abuse requires the involvement of multiple sectors of society. Elders "R" Us is the private sector's prototype elder abuse prevention training program targeting primary caregivers--nurses and nursing assistants.

Bottom-Up Approach

Elders "R" Us embraces a bottom-up as opposed to a top-down approach. The training is developed, designed, and conducted by a caregiver, all from a caregiver's perspective. Elders "R" Us is the world's only elder abuse prevention training conceived on the floor by a caregiver!

Practical Methodology

Elders "R" Us adopts the Gideon Model, a unique practical methodology to combat elder abuse. The Gideon Model↕ is premised on Knowledge + Understanding=Wisdom. This means, if caregivers have the necessary knowledge and understanding, they will have the wisdom not to abuse elders. A world free of elder abuse lies at the intersection of caregivers' knowledge and understanding of elders.

Proactive Training

Elders "R" Us' proactive ability is fueled by the need to stop elder abuse before it happens. Other efforts on elder abuse prevention such as elder abuse reporting and elder justice are mostly retroactive. The most important solution to elder abuse is prevention. Our elder abuse prevention training saves lives, prolongs lives, prevents health complications, reduces the cost of care, prevents lawsuits, restores confidence in nursing homes and assisted living facilities, is the right thing to do, and is a step towards a world free of elder abuse.

New Innovative concepts

Elders "R" Us applies new and innovative concepts in elder abuse prevention. Complex management concepts are broken up to the most basic level of understanding (simple ideas) to increase retention of learned information. Our training incorporates microlearning to the furthest extent possible and deploys state of the art presentation tools and techniques. The new tools and methods eliminate training resistance and bolster information retention.

Training Effectiveness and Evaluation

Elders "R" Us effectiveness and evaluation follows the sound principles of the Kirkpatrick Model. Kirkpatrick Model is the worldwide standard for evaluating the effectiveness of training. We follow the model's four levels:

  • Reaction, Learning, Behavior, Results.

It is on the third level (behavior) that Elders "R" Us towers over the competition. Elders "R" Us training perfectly mirrors the 'yeast-dough' effect (a small amount of yeast effectively ferments a large amount of dough). Our training transforms caregivers/trainees into agents (yeast) of elder abuse prevention who influence all the other employees (dough) to prevent elder abuse. Elders "R" Us conducts annual 'Caregiver Attitude Survey on Nursing Home Stays' to gauge targeted training outcomes and to study â€‹caregiver attitudes.

Caregiver Declaration

Elders "R" Us facilitates trainees/caregivers to commit to the principles of the Caregiver Declaration on the Prevention of Elder Abuse /Gideon Caregiver's Oath. Just as the doctor's Hippocratic oath requires physicians to uphold specific ethical standards, the Caregiver Declaration on the Prevention of Elder Abuse creates a sense of responsibility and accountability that ensures caregivers/trainees adhere to caregiver ethics and provide the best care, to the fullest extent of their abilities, to all elders.
